March 16, 2016– Champions for Meals Day, a component of March for Meals, was a great success! A total of 18 elected officials and business “Champions” teamed up with volunteers of Meals on Wheels of Salem County. Several visited Ranch Hope, Inc., Meals on Wheels’ caterer, to help with food preparation. This year’s Champions for Meals day had an increase of 40% participation from last year, due to more business leaders getting involved.

The national March for Meals campaign is sponsored by Meals on Wheels America to build awareness and help local programs raise funds to combat senior hunger in their communities. One in six senior citizens—about 9.3 million people—is at risk of hunger in America today, a 30% increase in just three years.

According to Peg Marshall, Meals on Wheels of Salem County Executive Director, “More leaders in all aspects of our County saw first-hand how Meals on Wheels makes an impact on the lives of their homebound elderly and disabled neighbors.” She added, “Ninety percent of our clients surveyed this year said they rely on Meals on Wheels for their nutrition and were unsure how they would get food without our program.”
